patent and computer crime law reform

Patent law – might be reformed at some point. The US Federal Trade Commission will investigate rampant and economically damaging “patent trolls.”

Computer crime law – might be reformed too, potentially. Named after Aaron Swartz, who committed suicide after feeling the heat of prosecutors with a massive legal axe to grind against him. One nugget:

The second major change would limit the possible prison terms for such an offense and change the language “conviction for another offense” with “subsequent offense.’ The new language is “to ensure that the penalty enhancement is directed at repeat offenders rather than individuals facing multiple charges.”

All criminal law should focus on repeat offenders, of course, not just those involving technology.
