snowden and human rights

Snowden is on the short list to receive Europe’s top human rights award.

Mr Snowden was nominated by Green politicians in the European Parliament for leaking details of US surveillance.

Nominees also include Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani teenager shot in the head for demanding education for girls.

I’d be happy with either one of the above receiving the award. They’ve earned it.

US tech fallout

In related news, Microsoft’s former chief privacy advisor uses only open source software.

“The public now has to think about the fact that anybody in public life, or person in a position of influence in government, business or bureaucracy, now is thinking about what the NSA knows about them. So how can we trust that the decisions that they make are objective and that they aren’t changing the decisions that they make to protect their career? That strikes at any system of representative government.”

I don’t see a lot of Windows or Apple OSX users switching overnight, but trust is the real currency here, and the NSA has just spent all of it on surveillance and left the US tech sector with the bill.
